Ringling College Alta Vista Elementary Summer Associate AFVN
The Summer Associates will partner with Alta Vista Elementary
School, a local Title I school, and Girls Inc Sarasota, a
charitable organization, to serve Sarasota youth residing in food
deserts to help "prevent summer slide", through education and arts
integration that aligns with the partners' educational goals. At
Alta Vista, 94% of students qualify for free and reduced school
lunches during the academic year and may become vulnerable to
hunger during the summer months without the same support they
receive throughout the school year. Alta Vista's Eagle Academy
Summer Program provides the structure to combat summer learning
loss through educational programming - all at no cost to registered
families who attend a once-per-week "Parent University" class. At
Girls Inc Sarasota, 75% of the registered girls qualify for free
and reduced lunch. Girls Inc of Sarasota County focuses on the
development of the whole girl through a combination of long-lasting
mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and research-based
programming that equips girls to navigate gender, economic and
social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

Member Duties : This project aims to create a mutually
beneficial relationship between the college, its students, the
Summer Associates, and the low-income community in Sarasota through
education and service. The SA's will work directly with Alta Vista
Elementary School (Title I) and Girls Inc (501c3) to assist them
with educating K-5th graders and their parents to prevent summer
learning loss. Educational programming will include building
literacy skills and arts integration. The SA's will provide direct
service, by volunteering with the children in the classroom in
educational and art activities, and indirect service, by planning
the curriculum, documenting the program for sustainability,
coordinating available Ringling students to assist with teaching,
and helping students develop reflective skills through art. This
will enhance their learning objectives as art and design students
by utilizing their skills, talents, and creativity to meet the
needs of the community through art instruction.
